Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light Organized by The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in New York City, the exhibition is comprised of iconic windows and lamps along with examples of opalescent flat glass and pressed-glass "jewels" that illustrate the rich colors available to the artists at the Tiffany Studios. The selections exemplify the masterful rendering of nature and subtle use of light and shading that was characteristic of Tiffany's leaded-glass objects.

Stephen Knapp: New Light Stephen Knapp creates innovative and engaging works that interact with, and are transformed by light. Using a special glass treated with metallic coatings that act as selective prisms, light is separated into different wavelengths of the color spectrum that refracts and reflects light onto surfaces and their surrounding spaces.

Stoddard Exhibit: Lake George Views
The Chapman recently purchased a small collection of Stoddard images of Lake George that previously had not been part of the museum’s collection. Particularly fascinating are photographs that depict what it was like to travel by steamboat on the lake. Funds for the purchase came from the museum’s restricted Acquisition Fund.
Lower Adirondack Arts Council Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council is a non-profit arts organization founded in 1972 to promote the arts and culture of the lower Adirondack region. LARAC houses a gallery, gift shop, and administrative offices. It is open Tuesday through Saturday 10-3 pm year-round and is located at 7 Lapham Place on City Park in Downtown Glens Falls. BJS Artworks Gallery Presents Susan Burden "Texture Transition" Gallery Statement: This exhibition includes paintings and drawings in pastel and pencil. Representing the transition of drawing to painting and spring to summer. Artist Statement: Inspiration comes from the interconnectedness of life. Everything is alive and constantly changing. I strive to interpret that feeling in the form of pastels and colored pencil. I hope your eyes and hearts are pleasantly drawn into my interpretations. My art journey started in Milwaukee Wisconsin where I earned a fine arts degree. Moving to Boise Idaho, I experienced the High Desert mountains and foothills. While in Boise, my artwork was shown at several local galleries. The next chapter in my life finds me discovering the Upstate area of New York. I have shown at the Saratoga Arts Center, Saratoga Train Station and Mimosa in Saratoga Springs, NY. I’ve also shown at the Tom Myott Gallery and Button Down Gallery at The Shirt Factory in Glens Falls, NY. I am a member of the Adirondack Pastel Society.

LocalFest TheShirt Factory arts and healing center announces the inaugural LocalFest: Stuff Made Here. The event is a showcase of both the history and continued tradition of manufacturing in Glens Falls and thes urrounding region. The current national trend of shopping locally is embodied by a number of manufacturers who create value right here in the City, just as the McMullen-Leavens Company did at the ShirtFactory building from 1902 to 1976, and as the building's more than 70 tenants continue to do today.

In addition to an open house showcasing the rich offerings of the ShirtFactory's shops, galleries, services and artist studios, LocalFestwill feature: A presentation on the history of manufacturing in Glens Falls by the Chapman Historical Museum; A full day of homegrown live music on the lawn; Glens Falls manufacturers exhibiting their wares and explaining their manufacturing process; Local writers offering readings and book signings of copies of their works for sale; Guest artists and artisans; Food vendors and restauranteurs from the local area; Local arts organizations offering children's activities; Non-profit organizations with educational information.

Outdoor Cinema Showing: When We Were Kings In 1974, boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman came to the still-emerging and politically unstable African nation of Zaire for what Ali called the "Rumble in the Jungle," a highly publicized world heavyweight championship fight. Documentarian Leon Gast flew to Zaire to film both the fight and a music festival (featuring B.B. King, The Pointer Sisters, and Miriam Makeba) organized by promoter Don King. Gast's footage was shelved for 22 years due to legal and financial problems, but when it was finally released in 1996, When We Were Kings provided a vivid portrait of the controversial Ali. At 33, he was considered past his prime for the Zaire fight, and his refusal to serve in the U.S. military on moral grounds was still an issue in the minds of many. But here, Ali displays strength, skill, intelligence, and tremendous charm, making it clear how he became one of the most renowned figures in the world of sports. And, while George Foreman is best known today as a genial commercial pitchman, he's seen here as a strong, forbidding opponent, not especially articulate and seemingly unstoppable. The film also features interviews with several notable fight fans, including Norman Mailer, George Plimpton, and Spike Lee. A fascinating document of a great moment in sporting and cultural history, When We Were Kings received an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won a Special Jury Recognition Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

An eccentric to the core, Maude lives exactly as she pleases, with avid collecting and nude modeling among her many pursuits. Outdoor Cinema Showing: Rear Window Laid up with a broken leg, photojournalist L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) is confined to his tiny, sweltering courtyard apartment. To pass the time between visits from his nurse (Thelma Ritter) and his fashion model girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), the binocular-wielding Jeffries stares through the rear window of his apartment at the goings-on in the other apartments around his courtyard. As he watches his neighbors, he assigns them such roles and character names as "Miss Torso" (Georgine Darcy), a professional dancer with a healthy social life or "Miss Lonelyhearts" (Judith Evelyn), a middle-aged woman who entertains nonexistent gentlemen callers. Of particular interest is seemingly mild-mannered travelling salesman Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), who is saddled with a nagging, invalid wife. One afternoon, Thorwald pulls down his window shade, and his wife's incessant bray comes to a sudden halt. Out of boredom, Jeffries casually concocts a scenario in which Thorwald has murdered his wife and disposed of the body in gruesome fashion. Trouble is, Jeffries' musings just might happen to be the truth. One of Alfred Hitchcock's very best efforts, Rear Window is a crackling suspense film that also ranks with Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) as one of the movies' most trenchant dissections of voyeurism. Outdoor Cinema Showing: West Side Story Romeo and Juliet is updated to the tenements of New York City in this Oscar-winning musical landmark. Adapted by Ernest Lehman from the Broadway production, the movie opens with an overhead shot of Manhattan, an effect that director Robert Wise would repeat over the Alps in The Sound of Music four years later. We are introduced to two rival street gangs: the Jets, second-generation American teens, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants. When the war between the Jets and Sharks reaches a fever pitch, Jets leader Riff (Russ Tamblyn) decides to challenge the Sharks to one last "winner take all" rumble. He decides to meet Sharks leader Bernardo (George Chakiris) for a war council at a gymnasium dance; to bolster his argument, Riff wants his old pal Tony (Richard Beymer), the cofounder of the Jets, to come along. But Tony has set his sights on vistas beyond the neighborhood and has fallen in love with Bernardo's sister, Maria (Natalie Wood), a love that, as in Romeo and Juliet, will eventually end in tragedy. In contrast to the usual slash-and-burn policy of Hollywood musical adaptations, all the songs written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim for the original Broadway production of West Side Story were retained for the film version, although some alterations were made to appease the Hollywood censors, and the original order of two songs was reversed for stronger dramatic impact. The movie more than retains the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, which is recreated in some of the most startling and balletic dance sequences ever recorded on film. West Side Story won an almost-record ten Oscars, including Best Picture, supporting awards to Chakiris and Rita Moreno as Bernardo's girlfriend, Anita, and Best Director to Robbins and Wise. Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed by Jimmy Bryant, Natalie Wood's by Marni Nixon (who also dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), and Rita Moreno's by Betty Wand. Outdoor Cinema Showing: Iron Giant A boy's best friend is his robot in this animated adventure from Brad Bird, best known for his TV work on such series as The Simpsons, King of the Hill, and The Critic. Set in 1957, The Iron Giant focuses on Hogarth (voice of Eli Marienthal), an imaginative nine-year-old boy who daydreams of alien invasions and doing battle with Communist agents. One day, Hogarth hears a local fisherman talk about something that surpasses anything he could dream up: a fifty-foot robot that fell from the sky into a nearby lake. Needless to say, Hogarth's mom, Annie (voice of Jennifer Aniston) finds this a little hard to swallow, but when Hogarth finds the robot (voice of Vin Diesel) and fishes him out of the water, his pal Dean (voice of Harry Connick Jr.), a beatnik sculptor who also runs a junkyard, offers to help by hiding the robot with his salvage. A government agent named Kent Mansley (voice of Christopher McDonald) soon gets wind that there's a mechanical invader of unknown origins in the neighborhood and wants to wipe out the potential threat. However, the robot (which loves to eat metal and is learning to talk) turns out to be friendly, and the boy in turn tries to teach his new pal the ways of humans. Outdoor Cinema Showing: Local Hero Bill Forsyth's whimsical tale of sweet-natured corporate rapacity features standout performances by Burt Lancaster and Peter Riegert. Lancaster plays Texas billionaire Felix Happer, who would rather gaze at the stars than worry about his multi-national oil company. Happer dispatches Mac MacIntyre (Peter Riegert) and Danny Oldsen (Peter Capaldi) to the small Scottish fishing village of Ferness to negotiate buying the entire town so Happer can drill for oil in the North Sea. Much to Mac's surprise, the entire town is happy to sell itself for big money, and the local innkeeper, Gordon Urquhart (Denis Lawson) -- who is also the town's accountant and mayor -- works with Mac on the negotiations. But a wrinkle appears in the deal when Ben Knox (Fulton Mackay), an old man who lives in a shack on the beach which has been owned by his family for centuries, refuses to sell. His reasons? "Who'd look after the beach then? It would go to pieces in a short manner of time." Outdoor Cinema Showing: Buena Vista Social Club Wim Wenders' documentary Buena Vista Social Club is about the adventures of Ry Cooder in Cuba. Cooder, best remembered by film fans for the wailing slide guitar theme of Wenders' Paris, Texas, went to Cuba in 1996 to meet with some legendary 'soneros' musicians of the '30s, '40s and '50s. The result was the album Buena Vista Social Club, recorded with such colorful characters as the 90-year-old singer/guitarist Compay Segundo, guitarist Eliades Ochoa, baritone Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo, "the Cuban Edith Piaf." The album won a Grammy, and in this refreshing documentary, Wim Wenders shows these exceptional musicians in their hometown, following them into their usual hang-outs -- the cafes, clubs and even living rooms -- as well as to concerts in Amsterdam and New York's Carnegie Hall, capturing their incredible vitality. "In Cuba, music flows like a river," according to Ry Cooder, who adds "Music is like a treasure hunt; you dig and dig and sometimes find something." Pursuing this metaphor, Wenders wanted to make a film that would "just float on this river ... not interfering with it, just drifting along." UNWANTED: Invasive Species of the Adirondacks Presentation by Hilary Smith, Director of the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program. The program is free and open to the public. Adirondack lands and waters face one of the biggest environmental challenges of all times - invasive species. Introduced from other places, invading plants and animals have no natural predators to keep their populations in check. They spread uncontrollably, wreaking havoc in rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, and woods and wetlands. However, organizations and communities across the Adirondacks are working on ways to protect the precious natural resources in the region from further harm and degradation. Speaker Hilary Smith will talk not only about Eurasian watermilfoil and other species that have received much press of late, but also about species that are lesser known. Invasive plants like Japanese knotweed and garlic mustard, which are not native, have taken up residence here and are growing out of control. They are gaining ground in our yards, along stream banks, in fields, woods, waters and wetlands. One may be tempted to start ripping plants up, but Ms. Smith cautions that before beginning any project to remove invasive plants, one should learn about their best management practices. Starting an invasive plant project without knowing the proper control methods can make the infestation worse and lead to even greater damage and frustration. In her talk, Hilary will share information about steps citizens can take to prevent the spread of invasive species. In 1998, the Adirondack Nature Conservancy, Adirondack Park Agency, NYS Department of Transportation and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation partnered together to assess the threat from invasive plant species. Based on field observations, the partners selected target plants that showed the greatest likelihood of widespread distribution into intact habitat, and in 2003 established the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program to work with local governments, community organizations and private citizens to address the problem. This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibit, Stoddard’s Natural Views, on display through September 2, 2012. This interdisciplinary exhibit uses Stoddard’s 19th century landscape photographs to explore the flora of the Adirondacks, highlighted by modern color images of plant details.

Stoddard Exhibit: Lake George Views
The Chapman recently purchased a small collection of Stoddard images of Lake George that previously had not been part of the museum’s collection. Particularly fascinating are photographs that depict what it was like to travel by steamboat on the lake. Funds for the purchase came from the museum’s restricted Acquisition Fund.

My art journey started in Milwaukee Wisconsin where I earned a fine arts degree. Moving to Boise Idaho, I experienced the High Desert mountains and foothills. While in Boise, my artwork was shown at several local galleries. The next chapter in my life finds me discovering the Upstate area of New York.
