Hyde Collection

Exhibitions

Now through Sunday, February 28, 2010
Divided by a common language? British and American Works from The Murray Collection The exhibition of approximately twenty works of Modern art from the twentieth century are part of a larger collection donated to the Museum by the late Jane Murray. Between 1991 and 1996, Murray gave nearly sixty works of Modern art to the Museum, the first significant donation of twentieth-century art received by The Hyde. An additional group of works was bequeathed by Murray upon her death earlier this year. This donation helped to form the foundation of the Museum’s Modernist holdings.
The exhibit, curated by The Hyde’s Executive Director David F. Setford, celebrates the works donated by Murray and reflects the breadth of her collection, while looking at differences and similarities between British and American Modernism. Artists represented in the exhibition include Britain’s Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, John Piper, Howard Hodgkin, and Paul Mount. American artists include Gregory Amenoff, Betty Parsons, Stuart Davis, and Ellsworth Kelly.
“This exhibition was organized as a tribute to Jane Murray’s legacy,” said Setford, “Her generosity to our Museum is only surpassed by the attention she paid in selecting works for her impressive Modern art collection.“ According to Setford, the exhibition pieces were selected to help visitors examine the similarities and differences between American and British works of the period, as both are areas of particular strength in the Murray Collection. Admission to the Museum complex is free for members. Voluntary suggested donation for non-members is five dollars.

Saturday, June 12, 2010 through Sunday, September 5, 2010
Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend The exhibition, organized by The Hyde Collection, will introduce the broad span of work by this most beloved American artist. Curated by Hyde Executive Director David F. Setford and Deputy Director and Chief Curator Erin B. Coe, the exhibition will seek to unravel the myth surrounding Wyeth and understand the man behind the paintbrush. According to Setford, “This will be the first opportunity since the artist’s death earlier this year to begin to critically reevaluate his contribution to and position in American art of the twentieth century.”
The exhibition will feature sections devoted to early coastal watercolors and landscape paintings, as well as a look at Wyeth’s models, his interest in vernacular architecture, and his connection to both the Regionalist tradition and Magic Realism.
The exhibition will comprise approximately fifty works, with the core coming from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. Featured in the exhibition will be examples of the artist’s works created in dry brush, watercolor, pencil, and tempera - including The Hyde’s own Wyeth watercolor – The Ledge and the Island, 1937- as well as works on loan from museums and private collections. “By showing the spectrum of the artist’s subject matter and his masterful skill in a variety of media, we expect the exhibition to appeal to a very broad audience,” said Coe.

Chapman Museum Exhibitions

Now through Sunday, January 3
A Personal Past Objects and archival materials do not necessarily have to be associated with a famous person, place or event to have value and be of interest. “A Personal Past” will focus on artifacts and manuscripts from the Chapman Museum’s collection and the more personal stories those items tell. When put into perspective, sometimes ordinary activities and familiar faces can touch and inspire just as well as the unusual and extraordinary. From the immigrant seamstress and local boys gone off to war, to three generations of women and a larger-than-life entrepreneur, their tales have helped to shape our history.

Closing Soon
Stoddard Exhibit: Adirondack Interiors Linen tablecloths, folded napkins, selections of fine cigars… and mounted deer heads? These items do belong together, in the setting of the Adirondack lodgings photographed by Seneca Ray Stoddard. This new exhibit will feature glimpses into the interiors of the hotels and inns that flourished in northern New York during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. While offering a light-hearted view of Victorian “rustic” décor, these fascinating images speak also of the lifestyle enjoyed by the wealthy of the period and their penchant for maintaining a level of comfort and control amidst the wildness of the Adirondack mountains.

Sesame Street Live: When Elmo Grows Up When Elmo and his Sesame Street Live friends think about growing up, it’s a musical show-and-tell! Bert dreams of becoming a forest ranger, Telly longs to be a cowboy and their newest friend, Abby Cadabby, wants to be a Fairy Godmother just like her mommy. IRONWEED FILMS PREMIERE NIGHT: THE QUEEN AND I Nahid Persson Sarvestani (2009) 90 min. When Nahid Persson Sarvestani, an Iranian exile, set out to make a documentary about Farrah, the wife of the shah of Iran, she expected to encounter her opposite. As a child, Persson Sarvestani had lived in dire poverty, watching Farrah’s wedding as if it were a fairy tale. As a teenager, she joined the Communist faction of Khomeini’s revolution that deposed the shah, sending him and his family volleying from country to country. When Khomeini betrayed his promise for democracy, imposing more violent measures than the shah had, Persson Sarvestani was also forced to flee. Thirty years later, she needs key questions answered and goes directly to the source. Surprisingly, Queen Farrah welcomes her as a fellow refugee from their beloved homeland, granting unprecedented access. Over the next year and a half, Persson Sarvestani enters the queen’s world, planning to challenge the shah’s ideology; instead, she must rethink her own. When Persson Sarvestani’s prior opposition to the shah surfaces, the queen shuts down filming. Yet, in the struggle to understand each other’s experiences, an unlikely friendship has blossomed. Confronting Farrah about the shah’s repression has become not only a political conflict but a personal one, and Persson Sarvestani’s objectivity is shaken. In this gripping, poignant consideration of subjectivity as truth, we learn that people write history. And can also heal it. The Queen and I couldn’t be more relevant as we reach across our own political aisles.

Crandall Public Library

Fall Film Program

Tuesday, November 24, 6:30 pm
Food, Inc. Robert Kenner tackles the food industry in this alarming documentary on the corporate takeover of U.S. agriculture. He contends that a few food superpowers, driven solely by greed to increase production also control our diets, while the USDA and FDA ignore, or consent to, their exploitation of the consumer. The film provides encouragement to break free from and take charge of the national problems of obesity, diabetes and new strains of e coli bacteria which are indications of a broken system.

Tuesday, December 1, 6:30 pm
Araya Benacerraf captures the life of the Venezuelan salineros and their backbreaking work in breathtaking images. The Peredas family works at night in the salt marshes, the Ortiz are fishermen and the Salaz collect salt. The three stories underline the harsh life of this region—all of which vanished with the arrival of industrial exploitation. Araya was originally compared to Flaherty’s Man of Aran & Visconti’s La Terra Trema (1947). Margot Benacerraf has described the film as “a cinematic narration based on script writing rather than a spontaneous action, a
feature documentary, the opposite of Italian neorealism” A film of such lasting beauty that Jean Renoir told Benacerraf after seeing the film: “Above all…don’t cut a single image!”

Tuesday, December 8, 6:30 pm
Still Walking Kore-eda’s [Afterlife & Nobody Knows] quiet drama is being compared with Ozu’s Tokyo Story. In 24 hours, an elderly couple unite with their family for the 15th time to mark the anniversary of their son’s death in childhood. The remaining siblings, a boy and girl are grown now. The son lives in the shadow of his brother while desiring to be accepted for his own accomplishments.

THIN Lauren Greenfield (2006) 105 min. Eating disorders have reached epidemic levels in America–yet only recently have they been recognized as serious mental illnesses. One in seven people with anorexia nervosa will die, making it the deadliest of all psychiatric diagnoses. With Thin, Lauren Greenfield, a photographer acclaimed for illuminating women's and society's attitudes toward the female body, gains unprecedented access to a Florida residential treatment center to observe four anorexic women, aged 15 to 30, struggling to recover over a six-month period. Her intimate, unflinching, yet unobtrusive, camera ventures into private and painful rituals like early morning weigh-ins, one-on-one and group therapy sessions, confrontations with staff, and tormenting mealtimes. As individual dramas surface and convoluted group dynamics erupt, the frightening tenacity and complexity of this affliction emerge. While each woman's fight is unique, abusing the body as a means of asserting control and measuring self-worth seems common to all. One patient shockingly admits that being thin is her greatest ambition: "If it takes dying to get there, so be it." The film's flawless vérité approach engenders closeness and emotional investment in the characters and allows us to draw our own conclusions about the treatment protocol and an insurance system unwilling to accommodate patients' wishes. Thin offers haunting, groundbreaking insight into the tangle of personal, familial, and cultural factors–beyond mere self-esteem or body-image issues–that produce the immeasurable, confounding suffering of so many.

HOLES IN HEAVEN New Science Ideas (2005) 60 min. HAARP (or High Frequency Active Auroral Research Project) is a controversial high-frequency radio transmitter operated by the U.S. military which beams high-level energy into the Earth's upper atmosphere. Ostensibly for ionospheric research, HAARP can also be used to locate hidden oil reserves and missile silos around the world. However, critics of HAARP say it could blow a massive hole in the upper atmosphere as well as disrupt the subtle magnetic energies of all life on Earth. This fascinating film narrated by Martin Sheen employs a journalistically balanced style to investigate a subject that could have a dramatic effect on us all.

Hyde Collection

Exhibitions

Saturday, November 28 through Sunday, February 28, 2010

POWER TRIP Paul Devlin (2004) 85 min They say that power corrupts, and nowhere is that more literally true than in Tbilisi, the capital of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Electrical power, using it, stealing it, supplying it, and even dying for it, is the focus of Power Trip, a fascinating documentary by Paul Devlin. Can AES-Telasi, the American-owned, privatized electric company in Tbilisi, convince residents to pay for power that costs twice the average monthly salary? Even if citizens do pay, will political deceit and widespread disrepair keep Tbilisi in the dark? Power Trip is a humorous, heartbreaking look at the culture clash between corporate power suppliers and citizens as they feel their way through post-Soviet Georgia, where corruption, civil war, and chaos are everyday occurrences, but electricity might not be.Can AES-Telasi, the American-owned, privatized electric company in Tbilisi, Georgia convince residents to pay for power that costs twice the average monthly salary?

SHUT UP AND SING Barbara Kopple (2006) 93 min This documentary captures the female country-&-western group the Dixie Chicks in performance around the U.S. and London between the years 2003 and 2006. While performing in 2003, singer Natalie Maines ignited a maelstrom of controversy and red-state outrage when she declared -- from a London stage on the eve of the Iraqi conflict -- that she was ashamed that President George W. Bush was from her home state of Texas. When a rabidly right-wing group picked up on it, the band found themselves in the center of controversy regarding the nature of patriotism, freedom of speech, feminism, and the split between pro- and anti-war Americans. Filmmaker Barbara Kopple brings us the fly-on-the-wall view of the next three years, capturing Haines and sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire in dressing rooms, on stage, and in recording studios, bonding with each other, their families, producer Rick Rubin, and their supportive manager, Simon Renshaw. Through the crises, they keep their sense of humor and sisterhood, not backing down from their liberal stance, and turning the backlash into a triumph. They also make some great music, and the film includes plenty of riveting, intense footage of the band in performance onstage and in the studio. Among the faces appearing in archival footage are President Bush, Bill Maher, and right-wing country star Toby Keith.Using witness testimony, expert analysis, news footage, and corroborating evidence this explosive and important film tells us that the official story of 9/11 is false. Starring George W. Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Dick Cheney, Philip Zelikow, Dan Rather, the late Peter Jennings, contributors from Fox News, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, firefighters, first responders and 9/11 victims, the film exposes the inconsistencies and lies put forward by our government about 9/11, the crime of the century. This movie is sure to spark tough questions from its viewers. Regardless of your political stance, this movie is sure to keep you awake for weeks. You will probably never look at your government and media the same way again.

HOME OF THE BRAVE Nancy Dickenson (2004) 75 min. A documentary that explores a little-remembered event in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, HOME OF THE BRAVE tells the story of Viola Liuzzo, the only white woman murdered during the struggle. Liuzzo traveled from her home in Detroit to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965 to take part in a march, and was shot dead for her efforts. The case made headlines around the country, and President Lyndon Johnson told the FBI to make finding her killers one of its top priorities. However, the trial of a group of Ku Klux Klan members for her murder ended without a conviction. This documentary takes another look at the case and its evidence, including some disturbing information about the FBI's investigation, and focuses attention on Liuzzo's children many years afterwards, who are all linked by a massive distrust of the government and its institutions. HOME OF THE BRAVE explores both a forgotten event of the Civil Rights movement as well as examining how the government often fails to protect its citizens.did something terribly wrong, but it's to Zenovich's credit that she doesn't dwell on this point. Instead she forms a harsh critique of a justice system that allows people like Rittenband to operate freely. The only missing part of the puzzle is the judge himself, who died in '93. But the body of evidence against his actions is skillfully dissected in this impressive feature.

THE INNER TOUR Ra'anan Alexandrowicz (2002) 98 min. A deeply affecting documentary that addresses the Middle Eastern conflict with a penetrating eye. The film follows a group of Palestinians as they embark on a three-day bus tour through Israel in 2000, just months before the historical Arab-Israeli war recommenced. What at first appears to be a diverse group of men, women, and children, with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, quickly gels into a tight unit of countrymen who are living under the shadow of the wealthy, more powerful Israel. Every one of these visitors' lives has been in some way affected by Israel, yet it isn't until a trip to a museum - in which Arabs are presented as cold-blooded murderers - that their anger begins to show. As the journey unfolds, the tourists are forced to confront emotions they didn't know they had in them. The burdensome weight of these feelings turns the trip into more than just a relaxing vacation; it becomes an emotionally draining experience that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Alexandrowicz uses this rare opportunity to his advantage by showing just how hopelessly convoluted the Middle Eastern conflict actually is.

Exhibitions

JEFF DUNHAM and his OUTRAGEOUS suitcase posse Jeff Dunham brings his unstoppable laughs to the Glens Falls Civic Center. Dunham has taken the art of ventriloquism to new heights and has transformed it into a cutting-edge comedy experience that has gained worldwide appeal.
Time magazine declared him “perhaps the most popular stand-up comedian in the U.S.” Concurrently, Forbes named Dunham as one of the most powerful celebrity in the world on its Celebrity 100 list, noting in an accompanying article how Dunham is “third-highest-earning comedian in America behind Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock” and had the top-grossing North American comedy tour of 2008. And Dunham’s rise as well as the expansion of his reach and impact rolls on as he debuts a weekly TV series, publishes his first book, takes his highly-successful line of merchandise out to general retail and embarks on a 60-date Comedy Central Live tour beginning in September.
As Slate recently observed, “By every conceivable measure, Jeff Dunham is America’s favorite comedian.” And with his TV series, book, continuing tour appearances, merchandise and more within Dunham’s comprehensive deal with Comedy Central, even greater levels of popularity and record-breaking success are certain to follow.

The Garden Scott Hamilton Kennedy’s documentary follows the 2004 struggle to save a thriving 14-acre urban farm in South Central LA, California.

Progressive Film Forum ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED Marina Zenovich (2008) 100 min In 1977, director Roman Polanski was untouchable. Film such as ROSEMARY'S BABY and CHINATOWN had cemented his reputation, and he staged a successful return to filmmaking following the death of his wife, Sharon Tate, in '69. But his appetite for narcotics and free love landed him in serious trouble with the law after an ill-fated photo shoot with 13-year-old Samantha Gailey led to full sexual intercourse. ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED is a documentary that looks at the court case and media feeding frenzy that followed Polanski's arrest in '77. Director Marina Zenovich takes an intriguing approach by focusing less on the incident itself, and more on the actions of the judge who presided over the case. Polanski isn't interviewed, but key figures such as the two opposing lawyers and Gailey all step forward to offer a harsh critique of judge Laurence Rittenband's handling of the trial. Zenovich's film is a real triumph. She expertly blends archival footage of Polanski with current-day reflections on the case from a host of key players. The build-up to the director's eventual exit and exile from the U.S. is executed with real tension, and the biggest surprise is that no one involved on either side of the case blamed Polanski for fleeing. Rittenband is painted as a highly corrupt, media-hungry figure whose ego dominated the proceedings. No one involved in the case denies that Polanski did something terribly wrong, but it's to Zenovich's credit that she doesn't dwell on this point. Instead she forms a harsh critique of a justice system that allows people like Rittenband to operate freely. The only missing part of the puzzle is the judge himself, who died in '93. But the body of evidence against his actions is skillfully dissected in this impressive feature.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS OSAMA BIN LADEN? Morgan Spurlock (2008) 93 min Documentarian Morgan Spurlock rocketed to fame after daring to take on the fast food industry in the entertaining and much-lauded SUPERSIZE ME. For his follow-up, Spurlock wades back into controversial waters, and attempts something even more dangerous than a month of eating Big Macs: he decides to hunt down the globe's foremost terrorist, Osama Bin Laden. When the film opens, Spurlock has just learned that his wife, Alex, is pregnant. Using this news as a springboard, he decides he must hunt down the "world's most dangerous man" in order to guarantee the safety of his new child. Thus begins Spurlock's journey into some of the most wartorn and perilous places on the globe: Egypt, Israel, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco. Spurlock travels from country to country, popping into mosques, fundamentalist Muslim schools, shantytowns, army bases, the Gaza strip, and the local mall, asking everyone along the way if they might know where he can find Osama. The provocative question never fails to elicit an interesting response, and Spurlock uses it to open up a dialogue about the people's feelings and attitudes toward America and the war on terror. Throughout the film, Spurlock comes across as one of the most genial fellows you could ever meet, and his good-natured charm goes a long way in getting interviews with people who might otherwise become hostile when smirkingly asked, "Where's Osama?" Some viewers might find fault with Spurlock's rather gimmicky, stunt man techniques, but others might enjoy his light approach to such a complex and heavy issue. While the film will undoubtedly spark a few heated debates, one thing is for certain: Spurlock does nice job of removing some of the mystery that surrounds the Middle East. He creates a very human portrait of the people, and reminds us that, at the end of the day, we are perhaps not so different.

You will probably never look at your government and media the same way again.

see our review on Degas & Music
Degas & Music Edgar Degas, known throughout the world as "the painter of dancers," was equally inspired by the world of music. This exhibition will bring together works that reflect the French Impressionist's fascination with music, including portraits of musician friends, dramatic images of cabaret singers, and stunning scenes of the music-filled world of the ballet. Degas & Music presents an engaging subject that has never been explored in depth or chosen as the subject of an exhibition. Degas & Music is organized by The Hyde Collection and curated by guest curators Richard Kendall and Jill DeVonyar. Admission is $10; $8 for seniors and students with ID, and $5 for Hyde members. Children under the age of 14 are admitted free.
Approximately thirty-five paintings and other works from major national and international collections, as well as The Hyde’s own holdings, will be included in the Degas & Music exhibition. As part of the exhibition, The Hyde will display for the first time its collection of rare heliotype Degas prints never before exhibited by the Museum. According to Erin Coe, the Hyde’s chief curator, “Music as inspiration for the premise of a Degas exhibition is groundbreaking and its contribution to Degas scholarship has international significance.”
In addition to the Degas & Music exhibition, The Hyde is collaborating with more than 40 arts and community organizations to present the Season of Degas - a series of lectures, exhibitions, performances, and community events - all with Degas-related themes. The project brings together more than forty arts institutions and community organizations that will host programs from New York’s Capital District north to Blue Mountain Lake. More than seventy Degas-themed events will be held in six upstate New York counties through November, 2009.
“We are tremendously proud to be bringing this level of exhibition to upstate,” said David F. Setford, The Hyde’s executive director. “It is our hope that the excitement surrounding Degas & Music will translate into many more visitors, not only to The Hyde, but to the Glens Falls & Lake George regions and beyond.” Tickets for ‘A Taste of Art’ are $75 per person. Reservations are required and accepted on a first-come, first served basis.

All Cordially Invited: Entertainment in the North Country, 1850 - 1920 What did people in Glens Falls and other communities in the North Country do for entertainment before TV? The Chapman Historical Museum’s summer 2009 exhibit, All Cordially Invited, will explore forms of entertainment from 1850, when most North Country communities were quite isolated, through 1920 when the automobile and the radio radically changed how people socialized.
In the 19th century the ball or dance was a popular form of entertainment that drew people together, often to support a local cause. Other social gatherings included lectures, picnics, revival meetings, clam roasts, excursions and ice cream socials. Later, railroads brought the circus and Wild West shows to town. Agricultural fairs, baseball games and horse tracks attracted crowds of spectators. People also experienced such new forms of entertainment as vaudeville acts and nickelodeons -- to be replaced by movie houses. Soon to follow in the 20th century was the radio, which with the automobile ended the region’s isolation, changing social customs as it did.
"All Cordially Invited" is planned in conjunction with the Hyde Collection’s Season of Degas. From July 12 to October 18, 2009, The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, New York will present Degas & Music, an exclusive exhibition devoted to the music-inspired works of French Impressionist Edgar Degas (1834-1917). To enhance the experience of regional visitors and tourists alike, The Hyde Collection is collaborating with area arts and community organizations to present a full summer/fall calendar of Degas-related events. The Season schedule will include exhibits, musical performances, lectures, and family events complementing the Degas exhibition.

Alchemie: Art by Laura Colomb UpstArt is proud and excited to announce “Alchemie” a new body of work by Laura Colomb. Recently named “Best Emerging Regional Curator” by The Metroland, Colomb’s newest body of work contains large diptychs with elements of Adirondack landscape and nature.
-The images in Alchemie are influenced both by the experience of the Adirondacks and by Netherlands-ish diptych painting. Diptychs express the idea that two pieces of artwork are somehow stronger next to each other, than one piece with all of the information together. They are both sculpture and painting, and tell a story. The Netherlands-ish diptych served as a means to communicate ideas of religion, and its relationship to its patrons. A way of hinting at the ‘space beyond’ and ‘life beyond’ was achieved through the presence of an open window. In this way, these paintings were rich with symbols that stood in for larger ideas. –
This show is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Friday and Saturday 11-5pm, Sunday 12-4pm. (This will be UpstArt’s last solo exhibition, a group show is slated for October as a farewell exhibition. More information to follow.)
