African-American Film Forum: At The River I Stand (1993) One of the most powerful documentaries about the workers movement, "At The River I Stand" dramatically captures the turbulence of the 1968 strike by sanitation workers in Memphis, TN, which became—tragically—one of the most important events at the civil rights movements as well. In workers history, this strike has achieved an almost mythical quality since it brought public-sector unionism to the south and proved that the civil rights and workers rights movements could be merged.
The documentary depicts so well the degrading working conditions of the sanitation workers in Memphis, who suffered daily humiliations--loading garbage cans filled with maggots, wearing handout clothing because their wages were so low and suffering segregation at work and in the city. One of the many strengths of this documentary is that it is firmly grounded in the experiences of these workers and in their struggles, even though the strike escalated into a major—almost epic—moment of the civil rights movement. When two workers, sitting to eat their lunches on the back of a trash truck, because they were not allowed to eat inside at the segregated facility, were pulled into the trash compactor and killed after an electrical malfunction, more than 1,100 workers walked out and began a heroic strike for union recognition and better conditions.
Using television news footage mixed with interviews of the participants more than 30 years after the strike, the documentary captures the energy and the tumultuous days of a strike which broke all of the local laws, while releasing an enormous surge of spirit from the workers and from the black community.

African-American Film Forum: The Road to Brown Produced by Mykola Kulish and William Elwood. The film begins with present day clips of students today attending school and riding school buses together. Then it shows archival footage of the time when blacks could only attend black schools and colleges. Many people are aware of or have heard of the highly publicized case, Brown vs. Board of Education, however, this was not the first case that dealt with segregation in the school system. The Road to Brown highlights and details these cases and introduces the viewer to Charles Hamilton Houston. Houston was the lawyer who fought and documented the unequal treatment of blacks in the educational system. He diligently worked to end the Jim Crow era. He is known as “the man who killed Jim Crow.” He brought to trial cases that involved quality education, salary inequities, and the admittance of blacks into white colleges. Houston also documented his work.

African-American Film Forum: The Black List: Volume One An impeccably mounted survey of voices from across the spectrum of African-American accomplishment, the first installment of "The Black List" is a rich and revealing work of portraiture. In this sparkling collection of interviews conducted by former New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell and assembled by helmer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, prominent athletes, authors, actors, musicians, politicians and many others recount their personal journeys with bracing warmth, eloquence and candor. A prime HBO acquisition at Sundance, classy project has endless sequel potential and will enjoy a long and distinguished life in theatrical, cable and eventual book form.
A succession of approximately four-minute interviews, docu unspools like a suite of variations on the themes of black culture and identity. Filmed against a gray backdrop at Greenfield-Sanders' home studio in New York, the conversations are presented, Errol Morris-style, in medium closeup, broken only by occasional cuts and archival photographs; neither camera movement nor Mitchell's voice intervenes to disrupt the powerful sense of eye-to-eye intimacy between speaker and viewer. Result is a fluid, graceful, formally becalmed work that relies almost entirely on its subjects to animate the frame -- which they do, effortlessly.
The idea of art as both inspiration and personal mentor recurs throughout "The Black List," whether it's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar talking about meeting Miles Davis, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash delivering an appreciation of Jimi Hendrix or Toni Morrison describing how she was steeped in literature since early girlhood. "Writing is mine," the Pulitzer-winning novelist declares at one point, and if anything connects the film's diverse voices, it's that sense of personally owning one's individual talents, of excelling without boundaries.

Adirondack Regional Theatres Auditions Adirondack Regional Theatres Auditions is a collaborative effort by Adirondack Theatre Festival, The Lake George Dinner Theatre, WrightStage Productions and The Wood Theater to provide an opportunity for area actors and technicians to meet with and audition for area production companies: Adirondack Theatre Festival, The Depot Theatre, Dorset Theatre Festival, Fort Salem Theater, Glens Falls Community Theatre, Home Made Theater, Lake George Dinner Theatre, Lake George Theatre Lab, Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama, Old Castle Theatre, Pendragon Theatre, Saratoga Shakespeare Company, WrightStage Productions.
Auditions are open to both Equity and non-Equity actors and technicians. Actors will be asked to prepare 1) A brief monologue or 2) A brief song or 3) A 1-2 minute monologue and 32 measures of a song. A piano accompanist will be provided for the day. Actors must provide sheet music.
Photocopying services will be provided at no cost.
Technical support personnel will be able to leave resumes as well with company representatives.
Actors may make appointments for specific time slots by calling ahead of time. The phone number to call is (518) 798-9663 ext. 30. 5-minute time slots will be available between 1pm to 4pm and 5pm to 9pm. Appointments are NOT necessary. Walk-ins are welcome and will be given the first available audition slot. An e-mail account has been set up at adirondackregionaltheatres@gmail.com. Participants are encouraged to send resumes and head shots to the above address in advance of February 22. We can then make copies for each producer to have.

Objects of Wonder and Delight: Four Centures of Still Life from the Norton Museum of Art The show brings together fifty-one works of art from the collection of the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida. The subject matter is still life and the exhibition at The Hyde comprises works in a variety of media including painting, watercolor, collage, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and textiles. Spanning four centuries, from the Ming dynasty of China to the early twenty-first century, this remarkable array of images and objects includes all of the major sub-genres of still life such as tabletop arrangements, flowers, and fruits and vegetables. Arranged thematically, the exhibition illustrates both the diversity and the longevity of the still-life tradition in China, Europe, and the United States.
The exhibition, which runs through April 21, 2011, features some of the most famous artists in Western art history, such as Marc Chagall, Gustave Courbet, William Harnett, Robert Mapplethorpe, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Yinka Shonibare, and Andy Warhol.
At 2:30 pm on January 29, Dr. Roger Ward, chief curator of the Norton Museum of Art and organizer of the exhibition, Objects of Wonder and Delight, will provide a lively presentation entitled Birds Pecking at Grapes and Other Shiny Objects: Four Centuries of Still Life from the Norton Museum. The talk will be a fast-paced account of the evolution of still-life painting in Europe and America, from Antiquity to the present, and how the diverse collection for which he is responsible has been deployed to create this exhibition.

S.R. Stoddard Exhibit - Animal Studies
Stoddard is best known for his landscape views of the Adirondack region. However, he also photographed other subjects that caught his creative fancy. This lighhearted sampling of the museum's 3000 Stoddard photographs features animals -- kittens, dogs, cows and even a frog.

Heritage Hall of Fame Who was the pilot for the first flight over the North Pole in 1926? Who was appointed Chief Justice of the United States by President Hoover in 1930? Who as a youth invented an automatic electrical typewriter? Who was the Girl Scout leader who formed Zonta Club for business and professional women? These questions and many more are answered in the Chapman Historical Museum’s exhibition.
Featured will be more than forty of the Heritage Hall of Fame panels, once on display in the Glens Falls Civic Center. The panels highlight the contributions of various individuals who either made a significant mark on the region or went off to other places where they influenced world events. Included are such local notables as Henry Crandall, Charles Reed Bishop, Susan B. Anthony, Douglass Crockwell, Arthur B. Irving, William McEchron, Winifred S. La Rose, and George Underwood.

Make a Little Sunshine $35 per child, $30 each additional sibling. LARAC Members receive 10% discount. Instructor Kate Hartley will help children ages 8-12 to create beautiful wall piece sculptures to brighten up our February walls and make a little sunshine! Inspired by Mexican folk art, students will be using clay, wire mesh, plaster, mirrors and paint. Children should wear old cloths and bring a healthy snack and a drink to each class. Parents are invited to join in for the last 15 minutes on Wednesday, February 23rd for their art show! (Takes place in our workshop upstairs.) Pre-registration is required by January 19th.
