Things to Do in Glens Falls for April
Crandall Public Library
Film Program
Tuesday, May 18, 6:30 pm
The September Issue (USA, 2009, 90 min., color, 35 mm) R.J. Cutler takes an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the production of Vogue Magazine’s highest circulating, largest in size and most influential issue.
Tuesday, May 25, 6:30 pm
Mary & Max (Australia, 2009, 80 min., color, 35 mm) Director Adam Elliot’s animation from Australia was the opening film of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Utilizing the voices of Toni Collette, Eric Bana and Philip Seymour Hoffman, this darkly humorous claymation is a deeply moving tale of friendship, between two very unlikely pen pals who are misfits in their own right: Mary, an Australian 8-year-old, and Max, an obese man living in New York City who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome. Barry Humphreys (aka Dame Edna Etheridge) provides the narration. Mary & Max“…wears its bleak but uplifting contradiction on its sleeve, and one of the film’s most endearing qualities is its refusal to pretty things up.-Matt Ravier, Film Australia, 2/2/09
Tuesday, June 1, 6:30 pm
The Cove (USA, 2009, 92 min. color, 35mm) Louie Psihoyos, National Geographic photographer with Richard O’Barry, former trainer for the TV show Flipper, created a team of daring activists and underwater photographers to secretly film the clandestine herding and slaughter of dolphins in the tiny Japanese village of Taiji. Enlisting George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic to design “rocks” with hidden cameras, the crew documented how dolphins were killed and sold as whale meat- much desired and more profitable. Winner 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
Tuesday, June 8, 6:30 pm
Black Maria Film Festival John Columbus, Director of the festival will provide commentary and lead the discussion after the films. Films will be screened from the winners of this years’ international competition including cutting-edge animation, documentary, narrative and experimental films. Titles and descriptions of the films to be screened will be available on the library’s web site and at the screening. The Black Maria Film Festival was named after the first motion picture studio built by Thomas Edison in Orange, NJ. Two screenings, with different films for each screening will be shown:
Tuesday, June 15, 6:30 pm
Andrew Wyeth As part of The Hyde Collection’s Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend exhibition (June 12-September 5, 2010), two films will be screened: Andrew Wyeth: Self Portrait Snow Hill, 1995 was produced by Wyeth’s wife Betsy. This “authorized” film biography covers over 60 years of the artist and his greatest works, family photographs, home movies, letters and the first interview with Wyeth’s model, Helga Testorf. Although Christina’s World won’t be on view during the exhibition, it is Wyeth’s most beloved and famous painting and the title of the second film which won four Emmys and is narrated by Julie Harris. Erin Budis Coe, Chief Curator and Deputy Director of The Hyde Collection will lead a discussion after the films.
Tuesday, June 22, 6:30 pm
A Serious Man (USA, 2009, 106 min., color, 35 mm) Ethan and Joel Coen got an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay for their recreation of the 1960’s Minnesota of their youth centered on the spiritual crisis of a middle-aged Jewish man, Larry Gopnik who, as a modern day Job wrestles with life’s questions as his marriage falls apart. He endures his best friend becoming his wife’s boyfriend, his children’s disdain, a university student who demands a better grade where he teaches physics, his slightly crazy brother, who camps out on his sofa and a gun toting neighbor. It’s a comedy with typical Coen brothers angst and humanity. “…bears every mark of a labor of love.” Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, 10/7/09
Tuesday, June 29, 6:30 pm
Bright Star (Canada, 2009, 119 min., color, 35 mm) Jane Campion uses John Keats’ poetry to underscore the fervent passion, and surprising decorum, that run deep in this story of his unconsummated romance with Fanny Brawne. The daughter of his landlady, Fanny was a fashion maven at 17, and a flirt; Keats was anemic and solitary. He loved her, and she, him. Their days play out, before what we know will be his untimely death, in the golden glow of young love and ardent verse. “Keats’s genius — underestimated by many of the critics of his time, championed by a loyal coterie of literary friends — is the fixed point around which ‘Bright Star’ orbits.”- A.O.Scott, NYTimes 9/16/09

What A Glorious Feeling A play with music and dance by Jay Berkow
Inspired by true events, experience the backstage drama behind the making of Gene Kelly's Singin' in the Rain. Many film buffs regard "Singin’ in the Rain" as the greatest movie musical of all time. As is often the case with beloved screen and stage presentations, the making of this award-winning film holds stories every bit as fascinating as the finished product. Inspired by true events, What a Glorious Feeling brings to life the tempestuous love triangle between Gene Kelly; Jeanne Coyne, the film’s dance captain; and Kelly’s co-director (and Coyne’s ex-husband), Stanley Donen. Jay Berkow’s new play, fittingly filled with music and dance, celebrates the genius of this artistic collaboration as it explores the emotional complexity of the trio’s lives behind the scenes. You’ll experience great music and the thrilling choreographic process behind some of Hollywood’s most enduring dance sequences. East coast premiere. (Contains mature language.)

Loving Leo By Sara Cooper & Zachary Redler. It’s common wisdom that the addition of a third person into a household can complicate the formerly serene life of a married couple. But what if that addition is not a child but the 73-year-old stepfather of the wife? A one-bedroom apartment in the Bronx is the setting for this humorous and poignant examination of the way we adapt to major changes in our lives. Loving Leo is another in ATF’s ongoing Play in Progress series, part of our commitment to the presentation of new works. It’s your chance to be a part of the creative process that produces the hit shows of tomorrow. Following the reading, get a glimpse of the art of playwriting as you discuss the show with the writers.

Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend The exhibition, organized by The Hyde Collection, will introduce the broad span of work by this most beloved American artist. Curated by Hyde Executive Director David F. Setford and Deputy Director and Chief Curator Erin B. Coe, the exhibition will seek to unravel the myth surrounding Wyeth and understand the man behind the paintbrush. According to Setford, “This will be the first opportunity since the artist’s death earlier this year to begin to critically reevaluate his contribution to and position in American art of the twentieth century.”
The exhibition will feature sections devoted to early coastal watercolors and landscape paintings, as well as a look at Wyeth’s models, his interest in vernacular architecture, and his connection to both the Regionalist tradition and Magic Realism.
The exhibition will comprise approximately fifty works, with the core coming from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. Featured in the exhibition will be examples of the artist’s works created in dry brush, watercolor, pencil, and tempera - including The Hyde’s own Wyeth watercolor – The Ledge and the Island, 1937- as well as works on loan from museums and private collections. “By showing the spectrum of the artist’s subject matter and his masterful skill in a variety of media, we expect the exhibition to appeal to a very broad audience,” said Coe.

Alice in Chains Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. Although they have been labeled grunge, alternative rock, and hard rock, guitarist Jerry Cantrell identifies the band as primarily heavy metal. He told Guitar World in 1996; "We're a lot of different things... I don't quite know what the mixture is, but there's definitely metal, blues, rock and roll, maybe a touch of punk. The metal part will never leave, and I never want it to".
Alice in Chains has sold more than 14 million albums in the United States, released two number-one albums and 21 top 40 singles, and has received seven Grammy nominations. The band was ranked number 34 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
Individual tickets will go on sale on Saturday, February 20 at 10 a.m. at www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets and charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Tickets will also be available at the Civic Center Box Office.
