Things to Do in Glens Falls, January 2010

Crandall Public Library

Film Program

Tuesday, February 9, 6:30 pm
Brick By Brick: A Civil Rights Story Directed by: Bill Kavanagh
USA 2007 53 min. "Brick by Brick" follows the historic U.S. v. Yonkers Federal anti‐discrimination lawsuit that grew out of local efforts toward equal opportunity. Three families in Yonkers challenge local government to change discriminatory housing and education laws and to exercise their equal housing rights. The film demonstrates that discrimination is as prevalent in the North as the South in an extremely important civil rights case in legal history.
“A fascinating artifact, particularly for those too young to remember Yonker’s relatively recent role as the Birmingham of the North.”‐ Lawrence Downes, New York Times, Feb. 2007

Tuesday, February 16, 6:30 pm
Scarred Justice: The Orangeburg Massacre 1968 Directed by: Bestor Cram and Judy Richardson. USA 2008 55 min. The slaying of three black students and the wounding of 28 more at a civil rights demonstration in South Carolina in 1968 is barely reported by the national press, while events at Kent State in 1970 take center stage when white students are killed. While the Orangeburg tragedy is blamed on an African‐American SNCC organizer, none of law enforcement officers from the South Carolina State Police and National Guard who were present were ever brought to justice. There were over 500 officials sent to Orangeburg, South Carolina to the peaceful demonstration. “The filmmakers, using news footage, interviews, and even dramatic reenactments, produce a superb documentary which details the events leading up the violence but also the conditions which sparked the tragedy.”‐ Timothy W. Kneeland, History and Political Science Department, Nazareth College.

Tuesday, February 23, 6:30 pm
Prom Night in Mississippi
Directed by: Paul Saltzman. Canada 2008 90 min. After eleven years, the offer made by Academy‐Award‐winning actor Morgan Freeman, to sponsor the first integrated prom in the community where he grew up is finally accepted. In April 2008, Charleston, Mississippi High School had their first integrated prom! In planning the prom, the prejudices which prevented an integrated prom are exposed including footage taken by the students themselves. While it seems impossible to us that a prom would be segregated in 21st century America, black and white students, parents, local officials and the community face Freeman’s challenge and overcome the prejudice of decades. “Nonetheless, the big event itself more than proves Freemanʹs point that if you allow people to socialize together, racial divisions will fast melt away…Inspirational!”‐ Dennis Harvey, Variety 1‐19‐09

Whose Life Is It Anyway? Wrightstage Productions and The Charles Wood Theater are proud to present the controversial 1979 Broadway hit “Whose Life Is It Anyway” by Brian Clark. The play stars Nicholas Baroudi and a cast of a dozen or so other local actors. The theme concerns quality versus quantity of life and one’s right to make decisions about their own destiny. Ken Harrison was a promising young sculptor until a terrible automobile accident rendered him paralyzed from the neck down. After many months of heroic efforts on the part of medical professionals, he has been stabilized and prepared for transfer to a long-term care facility. But Ken has decided he does not wish to go and requests that he be discharged from the hospital’s care so that he can die. The play is not only about Ken’s journey, but about the journeys of those around him, his loved ones and caretakers. The play is full of compassion, humor and thought provoking themes.
For the second year Wrightstage Productions, under the leadership of Founder and director Neil Akins, has partnered with the Wood Theater to bring fine drama to the winter residents of the Saratoga and Warren County areas. Last year’s productions of “A Walk In the Woods” and “Belle of Amherst” were critical successes for this partnership. “Whose Life Is It Anyway” is destined to be the winter highlight for those who love theater.

Hyde Collection

Exhibitions

Now through Sunday, February 28, 2010
Divided by a common language? British and American Works from The Murray Collection The exhibition of approximately twenty works of Modern art from the twentieth century are part of a larger collection donated to the Museum by the late Jane Murray. Between 1991 and 1996, Murray gave nearly sixty works of Modern art to the Museum, the first significant donation of twentieth-century art received by The Hyde. An additional group of works was bequeathed by Murray upon her death earlier this year. This donation helped to form the foundation of the Museum’s Modernist holdings.
The exhibit, curated by The Hyde’s Executive Director David F. Setford, celebrates the works donated by Murray and reflects the breadth of her collection, while looking at differences and similarities between British and American Modernism. Artists represented in the exhibition include Britain’s Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, John Piper, Howard Hodgkin, and Paul Mount. American artists include Gregory Amenoff, Betty Parsons, Stuart Davis, and Ellsworth Kelly.
“This exhibition was organized as a tribute to Jane Murray’s legacy,” said Setford, “Her generosity to our Museum is only surpassed by the attention she paid in selecting works for her impressive Modern art collection.“ According to Setford, the exhibition pieces were selected to help visitors examine the similarities and differences between American and British works of the period, as both are areas of particular strength in the Murray Collection. Admission to the Museum complex is free for members. Voluntary suggested donation for non-members is five dollars.

Sunday, April 11 through Sunday, May 23
Nineteenth Annual Regional Juried High School Art Exhibition

Saturday, June 12, 2010 through Sunday, September 5, 2010
Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend The exhibition, organized by The Hyde Collection, will introduce the broad span of work by this most beloved American artist. Curated by Hyde Executive Director David F. Setford and Deputy Director and Chief Curator Erin B. Coe, the exhibition will seek to unravel the myth surrounding Wyeth and understand the man behind the paintbrush. According to Setford, “This will be the first opportunity since the artist’s death earlier this year to begin to critically reevaluate his contribution to and position in American art of the twentieth century.”
The exhibition will feature sections devoted to early coastal watercolors and landscape paintings, as well as a look at Wyeth’s models, his interest in vernacular architecture, and his connection to both the Regionalist tradition and Magic Realism.
The exhibition will comprise approximately fifty works, with the core coming from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. Featured in the exhibition will be examples of the artist’s works created in dry brush, watercolor, pencil, and tempera - including The Hyde’s own Wyeth watercolor – The Ledge and the Island, 1937- as well as works on loan from museums and private collections. “By showing the spectrum of the artist’s subject matter and his masterful skill in a variety of media, we expect the exhibition to appeal to a very broad audience,” said Coe.

“AMERICAN CARNAGE” TOUR: SLAYER & MEGADETH With Special Guests TESTAMENT Slayer. Megadeth. The two names synonymous with fierce, crunching power. Two bands whose histories are inevitably intertwined in defining the thrash/metal genre. Individually, their respective prowess and accomplishments are impressive; but together, they're brutal and unstoppable. Megadeth and Slayer will join forces to co-headline "American Carnage," the most blistering, the most explosive, and the most eagerly anticipated mega-tour making its way to Glens Falls on August 11. In addition, Testament - who was also on the "Clash of the Titans" bill in 1991, will be Special Guests on the entire tour, marking the first time that all three bands have shared a stage together in more than 18 years, making this a "must see" metal event.
