Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness Joseph Dornan’s biography of Sholem Aleichem, often described as the Yiddish Mark Twain is an endearing film about the man whose work inspired the beloved musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” Through interviews with scholars, period photographs, and readings by contemporary actors including comedian Rachel Dratch, he gives us a poignant portrait of the man who witnessed and preserved the comical side of the immigrant experience for Jews in the late 1800s and early 20th century.
“A rich, beautifully organized and illustrated modern history of Eastern European Jewry examined through the life and work of the author ... The movie reveals that Sholem Aleichem was every bit as colorful a figure as the characters in his stories.” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times, 7/7/11

Tuesday, May 22, 6:30pm
Son of Babylon Director Mohamed Al Daradji elicits unforgettable performances from newcomers Yasser Talib and Shazada Hussein. After Saddam Hussein’s demise, a young Kurdish boy and his grandmother attempt to cross Iraq to find the boy’s father, who’s been missing since the first Gulf War. The grandmother is engaging, loving and humorous as their journey takes them through a country ravaged by decades of war and oppression. They meet a crosssection of survivors attempting to make sense of what has happened to their home and loved ones missing for over a decade.
"The stark, rubble-strewn photography is captivating, but the performances make the film, particularly Talib’s, whose final scene is one of the most extraordinary examples of child screen acting... The result is warm, human and quietly devastating." – Tom Huddleston, Time Out London, 2/10/11

Tuesday, May 29, 6:30pm
Midnight in Paris Woody Allen’s charming and romantic Parisian fantasy won the Academy Award for best original screenplay and has dazzled audiences worldwide. Owen Wilson stars as Gil, a successful Hollywood screenwriter who sheepishly admits he’s only a hack, but who has plans to become a respected novelist. Earnest and wideeyed, he’s a born romantic who, while visiting Paris with his fiancée, begins toying with the idea of staying forever. What develops is a funny, madcap adventure that takes him into an historical and magical realm. With appearances by Marion Cotillard, Adrian Brody, Kathy Bates, Carla Bruni, among others.
"…that extraordinary city has changed Allen's mood and altered his outlook on cinema and life. It may do the same for you.” – Kenneth Turan, LATimes, 5/20/11

Tuesday, June 5, 6:30pm
The Help Tate Taylor directed three actresses, Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, and Jessica Chastain to Academy Award nominations with Octavia Spencer winning the 2012 Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress in this acclaimed adaption of Kathryn Stockett's beloved bestseller. Set mostly in the households of segregated Mississippi at the onset of the Civil Rights Movement, the story follows the lives of African American maids who are asked by Skeeter, a young white college graduate who wants to be a journalist, to tell the real story of what it’s like working for whites. The South in the 1960s was a dangerous place for people who wanted change. This fictional story is moving, inspirational and unforgettable.
“… Viola Davis is a force of nature and Octavia Spencer has a wonderfully expressive face and flawless comic timing.” – Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun-Times, 10/9/11

Tuesday, June 12, 6:30pm
The Descendants Alexander Payne’s brilliant and expansive tragicomedy stars George Clooney as an owner of ancient Hawaiian land who is caught in a terrible family crisis. Matt King (Clooney) is forced to examine his life more closely than he cares to when, in the midst of a multi-million dollar land deal, his wife has an accident which has left her in a vegetative state and that’s not all... Adapted from the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, the film won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. With phenomenal supporting performances by Shailene Woodley, Robert Forster, and Beau Bridges.
"Achieves the emotional impact of good melodrama and the hectic absurdity of classic farce without ever seeming to exaggerate…every moment of the movie feels utterly and unaffectedly true." – A.O. Scott, The New York Times, 11/15/11

Tuesday, June 19, 6:30pm
The Guard John Michael McDonagh’s unconventional buddy comedy about the outrageous and hilarious Irish lawman, Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) and the serious and dapper FBI agent, Wendell Pierce (Don Cheadle) follows the pair as they try to stop an international drug smuggling operation. Pierce finds the hard living Boyle repugnant and Boyle, for his part, thinks Pierce cramps his style. As they are forced to work together, the improbable odd-couple come to a surprising compromise of respect and understanding despite their differences. A surprise hit at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, it was nominated for the esteemed Grand Jury Prize.
“Provides an antic, profanely playful addition to the goofy, hard-boiled genre Quentin Tarantino helped launch...The Guard himself may be no angel, but his movie is a wee slice of heaven.” – Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post, 8/12/12

Tuesday, June 26, 6:30pm
The Big Year David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) directs an all-star cast in a comedy about the surprising world of cutthroat competitive birdwatching. Owen Wilson stars as the unstoppable reigning champion of the field, with Steve Martin as a recent retiree and Jack Black as a young upstart both attempting to upset his winning record. The three men must cross North America in their efforts to become the titleholder, and the impressive bird and nature photography has won the film an endorsement from the National Audubon Society. Rashida Jones, Anjelica Huston, and Dianne Wiest co-star.
“It’s not often that a mainstream movie focuses on an eccentric subset of the population without turning them into grotesques or cute little goofballs ... It’s like an Easter egg hunt for adults, joyous and sweet.” – Mary Pols, Time Magazine, 10/12/11

Tuesday, July 2, 6:30pm
Chihuly and the Masters of Venice Directed by Peter West, Ken Samuelsen, and Michael McCallum, Dale Chihuly works within the secretive world of Venetian glassmaking, seizing an opportunity to create exquisite work-if only he can get the two greatest glass masters to work together. Watch as Chihuly works first individually, and then together, with Lino Tagliapietra and Pino Signoretto for a series of historic glassblowing sessions that created some of the most imaginative and technically challenging glass ever created.
This program is part of The Hyde Collection’s exhibitions for Summer of Light: June 17 – September 16, 2012.
