Before Tomorrow (Canada, 2008, 93 min., color, 35mm) Meet the Filmmaker: Marie-Hélène Couisineau. Marie-Hélène Couisineau and Inuit elder Madeline Piujuq Ivalu (who stars in the film as the grandmother, Ningiuq) co-directed this Igloolik Isuma Productions that also produced Fast Runner. Based on a novel by Danish writer Jørn Riel, it was shot in Nunavik, northern Quebec, near the village of Purvirnituq, the setting is the 1840s, at a time when many tribes have not yet experienced first contact with Whites. This is a hunting gathering society, with summer fishing and winter seal hunting as their means of survival. Ningiuq, her grandson Maniq and her friend and elder, Kutugok spend a summer fishing on an island away from the main tribe. When the tribe fails to return to pick them up, they return on their own to discover disaster has befallen all they know. In an instant, their lives change as darkness and cold take over during the Arctic winter. Survival in the most hostile of environments for grandmother and grandson becomes a metaphor for survival of indigenous peoples.- adapted from review by Christine McDonald, MultiCultural Review, Winter 2009

Mary & Max (Australia, 2009, 80 min., color, 35 mm) Director Adam Elliot’s animation from Australia was the opening film of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Utilizing the voices of Toni Collette, Eric Bana and Philip Seymour Hoffman, this darkly humorous claymation is a deeply moving tale of friendship, between two very unlikely pen pals who are misfits in their own right: Mary, an Australian 8-year-old, and Max, an obese man living in New York City who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome. Barry Humphreys (aka Dame Edna Etheridge) provides the narration. Mary & Max“…wears its bleak but uplifting contradiction on its sleeve, and one of the film’s most endearing qualities is its refusal to pretty things up.-Matt Ravier, Film Australia, 2/2/09

The Cove (USA, 2009, 92 min. color, 35mm) Louie Psihoyos, National Geographic photographer with Richard O’Barry, former trainer for the TV show Flipper, created a team of daring activists and underwater photographers to secretly film the clandestine herding and slaughter of dolphins in the tiny Japanese village of Taiji. Enlisting George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic to design “rocks” with hidden cameras, the crew documented how dolphins were killed and sold as whale meat- much desired and more profitable. Winner 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

Tuesday, June 22, 6:30 pm
A Serious Man (USA, 2009, 106 min., color, 35 mm) Ethan and Joel Coen got an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay for their recreation of the 1960’s Minnesota of their youth centered on the spiritual crisis of a middle-aged Jewish man, Larry Gopnik who, as a modern day Job wrestles with life’s questions as his marriage falls apart. He endures his best friend becoming his wife’s boyfriend, his children’s disdain, a university student who demands a better grade where he teaches physics, his slightly crazy brother, who camps out on his sofa and a gun toting neighbor. It’s a comedy with typical Coen brothers angst and humanity. “…bears every mark of a labor of love.” Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, 10/7/09
Tuesday, June 29, 6:30 pm
Bright Star (Canada, 2009, 119 min., color, 35 mm) Jane Campion uses John Keats’ poetry to underscore the fervent passion, and surprising decorum, that run deep in this story of his unconsummated romance with Fanny Brawne. The daughter of his landlady, Fanny was a fashion maven at 17, and a flirt; Keats was anemic and solitary. He loved her, and she, him. Their days play out, before what we know will be his untimely death, in the golden glow of young love and ardent verse. “Keats’s genius — underestimated by many of the critics of his time, championed by a loyal coterie of literary friends — is the fixed point around which ‘Bright Star’ orbits.”- A.O.Scott, NYTimes 9/16/09

MEMORIAL GATHERING for CHARLEY SARNACKI At Amigos Cantina in Schuylerville. I am very saddened to announce that Charley Sarnacki, our good friend, fellow baker (and, of course, Lake Trout Extraordinaire), passed away last Sunday. All who knew him are welcome to gather with us and remember him this Monday at 5:30 pm in Schuylerville at Amigos Cantina. Charley was not only a friend to all, he was one of those truly special people so full of life and so unique that the effect he had was always lasting. Every hour spent with him was life-affirming. I can't think about Charley without immediately feeling happy, remembering the countless laughs and smiles he caused, either directly or indirectly. He was truly a magical person and I will miss him a lot.

Nineteenth Annual Regional Juried High School Art Exhibition
Saturday, June 12, 2010 through Sunday, September 5, 2010
Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend The exhibition, organized by The Hyde Collection, will introduce the broad span of work by this most beloved American artist. Curated by Hyde Executive Director David F. Setford and Deputy Director and Chief Curator Erin B. Coe, the exhibition will seek to unravel the myth surrounding Wyeth and understand the man behind the paintbrush. According to Setford, “This will be the first opportunity since the artist’s death earlier this year to begin to critically reevaluate his contribution to and position in American art of the twentieth century.”
The exhibition will feature sections devoted to early coastal watercolors and landscape paintings, as well as a look at Wyeth’s models, his interest in vernacular architecture, and his connection to both the Regionalist tradition and Magic Realism.
The exhibition will comprise approximately fifty works, with the core coming from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. Featured in the exhibition will be examples of the artist’s works created in dry brush, watercolor, pencil, and tempera - including The Hyde’s own Wyeth watercolor – The Ledge and the Island, 1937- as well as works on loan from museums and private collections. “By showing the spectrum of the artist’s subject matter and his masterful skill in a variety of media, we expect the exhibition to appeal to a very broad audience,” said Coe.

A Personal Past Objects and archival materials do not necessarily have to be associated with a famous person, place or event to have value and be of interest. “A Personal Past” focuses on artifacts and manuscripts from the Chapman Museum’s collection and the more personal stories those items tell. When put into perspective, sometimes ordinary activities and familiar faces can touch and inspire just as well as the unusual and extraordinary. From the immigrant seamstress and local boys gone off to war, to three generations of women and a larger-than-life entrepreneur, their tales have helped to shape our history.

Alice in Chains Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. Although they have been labeled grunge, alternative rock, and hard rock, guitarist Jerry Cantrell identifies the band as primarily heavy metal. He told Guitar World in 1996; "We're a lot of different things... I don't quite know what the mixture is, but there's definitely metal, blues, rock and roll, maybe a touch of punk. The metal part will never leave, and I never want it to".
Alice in Chains has sold more than 14 million albums in the United States, released two number-one albums and 21 top 40 singles, and has received seven Grammy nominations. The band was ranked number 34 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
Individual tickets will go on sale on Saturday, February 20 at 10 a.m. at www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets and charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Tickets will also be available at the Civic Center Box Office.

“AMERICAN CARNAGE” TOUR: SLAYER & MEGADETH With Special Guests TESTAMENT Slayer. Megadeth. The two names synonymous with fierce, crunching power. Two bands whose histories are inevitably intertwined in defining the thrash/metal genre. Individually, their respective prowess and accomplishments are impressive; but together, they're brutal and unstoppable. Megadeth and Slayer will join forces to co-headline "American Carnage," the most blistering, the most explosive, and the most eagerly anticipated mega-tour making its way to Glens Falls on August 11. In addition, Testament - who was also on the "Clash of the Titans" bill in 1991, will be Special Guests on the entire tour, marking the first time that all three bands have shared a stage together in more than 18 years, making this a "must see" metal event.
