Hyde Collection

Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region Juried Exhibition Founded in 1936, the exhibition is one of the longest running annual juried exhibitions in the country and highlights the finest works of contemporary artists working along the Mohawk-Hudson corridor. This is the first year that The Hyde Collection will host the exhibition, which rotates among three venues. The other two hosts are The Albany Institute of History and Art and the University Art Museum at the University at Albany. The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday, October 3 from noon to 5 pm with non-member admission throughout the duration of the exhibition to be by donation suggested at $5. Juror for the 2010 Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region exhibition is Charles Desmarais, Deputy Director for Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Desmarais leads a staff of eighteen curators and manages the collection, conservation, education, exhibition, and library departments at the museum. He previously served as director of the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati and was director of the Laguna Art Museum and the California Museum of Photography at the University of California. Approximately 340 artists who work within a 100-mile radius of Albany and Glens Falls submitted images of their pieces. After first-round judging, eighty-six artists were selected to bring their works to the Museum for final selection.

Stoddard is best known for his landscape views of the Adirondack region. However, he also photographed other subjects that caught his creative fancy. This lighhearted sampling of the museum's 3000 Stoddard photographs features animals -- kittens, dogs, cows and even a frog.

Jean, a contractor is married to Anne Marie, a book factory worker. They have a son whose teacher,Véronique is from Paris and represents all that the couple are not. After a brief flirtation, it’s not clear if Jean and Véronique have become intimate. The strength of the film comes in the questions

film company that deals with cutting edge film productions. He’s also the head of a
household with his Italian wife Sylvia and they have three daughters, one a teenager. It’s a loving intact family. While things appear successful in Grégoire’s company, all is not what it seems as things start to unravel and the family is tested to its limits. “…what French writer-director Mia Hansen-Love has created is an extraordinary empathetic humanistic drama, a film of love, joy, sadness and hope that understands how complex our emotions are and does beautiful justice to them.” –

died when she was 12 and whose father then disappeared. She had two sisters and two
brothers. She and her sisters ended up in an orphanage. She later became a singer and escaped poverty by becoming a mistress. Her success in business as a designer came naturally as she changed the course of women’s fashion in the 20th century. Winner of the French César for Best Costume design it was nominated for an Oscar® for the same. “The blossoming of her ambition, as much as her love life, drives the story forward, and turns Coco Before Chanel into a costume drama worthy of the name.” – A.O. Cut off from society, the planning of his funeral brings him back to town where people are wary of him because of the reputation he’s built for himself. Seventeen year old teenager, Ree, played by Jennifer Lawrence, whose mom is incapable of being the mother of her
family, tries to save their home and tend to the daily needs of her brother and sister. She first has to find her drug-dealing father who used the family home for his bail. And, he’s jumped bail. Fans of the late John Lennon will undoubtedly commemorate what would have been his 70th birthday on October 9, 2010 in a variety of ways. But one of the most unique tributes will come from fellow musicians, namely the folk/rock artists Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step and Tom Dean of Devonsquare. Together, they have produced “Imagined: The John Lennon Song Project,” a thoughtfully re-imagined tribute that celebrates the genius and artistry of Lennon.

The show that started at ATF in 2003 and has since toured the county comes home. Compared to the work of David Sedaris, It Goes Without Saying is a uniquely crafted autobiographical tour-de-force in which Bill shares funny, heartbreaking, and unbelievable true stories from his career as an actor and mime and his life-long exploration of the role silence plays in all our lives. It Goes Without Saying takes you on a scenic tour of Bill’s life thus far; from his childhood in the wilds of Montana, to outrageous jobs as a performer across the country, to the whirlwind of Broadway and studying with the legendary Marcel Marceau.
Bill created It Goes Without Saying at ATF in 2003 working with Founding Artistic Director Martha Banta and feedback from ATF’s audience. Since then, Bill has performed his show to enthusiastic audiences Off-Broadway in NYC and throughout the United States. Over the course of its 16 year history, many of ATF’s premieres have gone on to receive productions across the country, but this is the first time one of them has returned home.

Gallery Talks: Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region Juried Exhibition The Hyde Collection host gallery talks by artists currently exhibiting works in the 2010 Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region juried exhibition at the Museum. The gallery talks are designed to provide an avenue for exhibiting artists to discuss their work and interact via question and answer sessions with visitors. Presenting artists will be Naomi Lewis of Albany, NY and John Hampshire of Troy, NY. Lewis, whose exhibition work is titled Wallpaper: Crib Sheet, received her MFA from the University at Albany and her BS in Studio Art from Skidmore College. She has had a series of solo exhibitions in the area and her works have been selected for a number of other juried shows, including Miniprint Finland. She is the Exhibition and Outreach Coordinator for the University at Albany Art Museum.
Hampshire will discuss his work, Labyrinth 229, the winner of the University at Albany Alumni Association’s Dr. Arthur C. Collins ’48 Purchase Award in the current exhibition. Hampshire, an Associate Professor of Studio Art at SUNY Adirondack, earned his MFA at the University at Albany and his BS in Art at Skidmore College. His work has been shown in one- and two-person exhibitions throughout the region.
Admission to the gallery talks is by donation. Reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis and are suggested since participation is limited to 35 individuals for each evening. Artists speaking that evening are Gina Occhiogrosso of Troy, NY and Katie DeGroot of Fort Edward, NY. Occhiogrosso will discuss her work, Homework (Phase 1), winner of the Maryann Bell Juror’s Award. She holds an MFA from SUNY Buffalo and her BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. In addition to national group exhibitions, she has had several one-person shows in the Capital Region.
DeGroot, whose exhibition work titled Hottie won the Marijo Dougherty and Norman Bauman Juror’s Award, attended New York University and earned her BA at Illinois State University. She has been the recipient of three Yaddo residencies and participated in both regional group exhibitions and galleries in New York. She is currently the Director of the Summer Studio Art Program at Skidmore College.
Admission to the gallery talks is by donation. Reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis and are suggested since participation is limited to 35 individuals for each evening. LARAC 28th Annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival The Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council will be holding its 28th Annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday November 6th and Sunday November 7th at Adirondack Sports Complex, a.k.a. “The Dome”, located on Sherman Road in Queensbury. The Art Festival consists of a juried art and craft show. General admission is $4, children under 12 are free, and it is open to the public 10 am-5 pm Saturday and 10 am-4 pm Sunday. There will also be a Bounce Festival on site for children while parents shop. Each local, regional and national artist in attendance was selected to exhibit based on originality, quality, execution, presentation and overall fit with the LARAC festival as a community event. An eclectic selection of art and craft mediums will be represented: pottery, oil and watercolor painting, stained glass, photography, jewelry, custom cabinetry, wood carving, stoneware, specialty gourmet food items, rustic furniture and more. With prices ranging from a few dollars to several hundred, this is an opportunity for holiday gift buying and personal collecting. The creating artist is on site in each booth. 15th annual Autumn Leaves: Glens Falls Chronicle Book Fair At the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls. Typically, more than 120 presenters - authors, book sellers, publishers and non-profit groups - participate, with children's books, local and regional history, travel guides, outdoors books, cookbooks, photography, novels, mysteries and detective stories, poetry, humor and much more. Children's activities, book signings, panel talks, slide-illustrated lectures, multi-media programs and much more are scheduled all day. Women Without Men (Germany, Austria, France, 2009, 99 min., color, 35mm)Farsi with English Subtitles
Shirin Neshat, photographer and visual artist was born in Iran, left in 1979 and was banned from visiting after 1996 because of the political nature of her work about Iran. Based on Shahrnush Parsipur’s magic realist novel, she adapted her
own video installation transforming it into a feature about the coup in Iran in 1953. Following the stories of four women from different backgrounds, she explores the results of the British/US led coup which reinstated the Shah. “With a camera that floats effortlessly through the lives of these women and the beautiful countryside of Iran, Neshat explores the social, political and psychological dimensions of her characters as they meet in a metaphorical garden…”–

After a brief flirtation, it’s not clear if Jean and Véronique have become intimate. The strength of the film comes in the questions

brothers. She and her sisters ended up in an orphanage. She later became a singer and escaped poverty by becoming a mistress. Her success in business as a designer came naturally as she changed the course of women’s fashion in the 20th century. Imaginary Invalid Moliere’s classic satire on the world of medicine, The Imaginary Invalid, produced by Pendragon Theatre, runs for one night only on tour at the Wood Theater on Saturday October 2, 2010 at 7:30 pm. Written in 1673, Pendragon’s version is Constance Congdon’s recent zany adaptation filled with romantic triangles, double entendres and mistaken identities.
Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner has called Constance Congdon “one of the best playwrights this language has produced.” She currently teaches playwriting at Amherst College. Director Burdette Parks: “One reason for the play's continued success three hundred plus years after it was penned is the very timelessness of the material. Even with the considerable advances of medical practice, especially over the past century, many of the basic themes and scenes in the play remain painfully familiar to modern audiences. The play was written by an actor/playwright as a vehicle for himself in a clearly theatrical piece with its primary goals being satire, comedy and entertainment.”

The show that started at ATF in 2003 and has since toured the county comes home. Compared to the work of David Sedaris, It Goes Without Saying is a uniquely crafted autobiographical tour-de-force in which Bill shares funny, heartbreaking, and unbelievable true stories from his career as an actor and mime and his life-long exploration of the role silence plays in all our lives. It Goes Without Saying takes you on a scenic tour of Bill’s life thus far; from his childhood in the wilds of Montana, to outrageous jobs as a performer across the country, to the whirlwind of Broadway and studying with the legendary Marcel Marceau.
Bill created It Goes Without Saying at ATF in 2003 working with Founding Artistic Director Martha Banta and feedback from ATF’s audience. Since then, Bill has performed his show to enthusiastic audiences Off-Broadway in NYC and throughout the United States. Over the course of its 16 year history, many of ATF’s premieres have gone on to receive productions across the country, but this is the first time one of them has returned home.

Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region Juried Exhibition Founded in 1936, the exhibition is one of the longest running annual juried exhibitions in the country and highlights the finest works of contemporary artists working along the Mohawk-Hudson corridor. This is the first year that The Hyde Collection will host the exhibition, which rotates among three venues. The other two hosts are The Albany Institute of History and Art and the University Art Museum at the University at Albany. The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday, October 3 from noon to 5 pm with non-member admission throughout the duration of the exhibition to be by donation suggested at $5. Juror for the 2010 Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region exhibition is Charles Desmarais, Deputy Director for Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Desmarais leads a staff of eighteen curators and manages the collection, conservation, education, exhibition, and library departments at the museum. He previously served as director of the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati and was director of the Laguna Art Museum and the California Museum of Photography at the University of California. Approximately 340 artists who work within a 100-mile radius of Albany and Glens Falls submitted images of their pieces. After first-round judging, eighty-six artists were selected to bring their works to the Museum for final selection.

In the Summer of 2008 Philadelphia found itself in the midst of a murder epidemic. Mural Arts Project and Interact Theatre of Philadelphia commissioned Sean Christopher Lewis to dramatize the situation by using hip hop and documentary theatre techniques to weave together the story of murdered teaching fellow Beau Zabel. Killadelphia was created through interviews of inmates at Graterford Prison – men employed to paint murals throughout Philadelphia while serving life sentences for murder. Their stories are bolstered by the lyrics, speeches and thoughts of local rap artists, city officials, emergency room technicians, everyday citizens and even Conservative radio personalities. Together these voices present a living snapshot of an urban center in a state of emergency.
Touring to colleges, theatres and prisons for the past two years, Killadephia has garnered critical and public praise including the 2010 National New Play Network Smith Prize for Drama, the Central Ohio Theatre Circle citation for Best Touring Production and a coveted Barrymore Nomination for Best Collaboration from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia.
Lewis first performed in our area as a part of Adirondack Theatre Festival’s 2009 summer season. Lewis’ four night run of his other solo show, I Will Make You Orphans, was hailed as the artistic achievement of the summer.
This performance of Killadelphia is a joint offering by the SUNY Adirondack Theatre Program and Adirondack Theatre Festival. It is funded in part by the ACC Foundation and the Rivendell Foundation.

Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice is one of the most acclaimed plays in recent years, written by one of the contemporary theatre’s most celebrated playwrights, (The Clean House, In the Next Room,) Eurydice revisits the Orpheus myth through the eyes of its heroine. Andrew Wyeth in Music, Poetry, and Dance The Hyde Collection once again presents a Catherine Reid multimedia event in conjunction with its summer exhibition. Titled Andrew Wyeth in Music, Poetry, and Dance, the performance piece is based on original music by Catherine Reid and will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 3 and 4, 2010 in the Museum’s Helen Froehlich Auditorium. Inspiration for the presentation is the Museum’s Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend exhibition that closes this Labor Day weekend.
The experience, which explores Andrew Wyeth’s work and life, will feature several modern/jazz/hip-hop dances choreographed by Heather Walczyk and performed by her dance team. The dances will be accompanied by projected collages created by visual producer Katherine Corney and featuring images by writer/photographer Jon Katz. A beat poet/rap piece that represents the three generations of artists (NC, Andrew, and James Wyeth) will be performed by Chris Reed Jr. and Nick Lyon. Laura Roth, Debbie Gecewicz, Patrick Doyle, Hillary Parker, Jim Chaffin, and Scott Jarett will perform Catherine’s musical settings of poems by Wyeth’s contemporaries (that contain imagery relating to Wyeth’s work), as well as Andrew Wyeth-inspired songs with words by local poets Paul Pines and Stu Kuby. In addition, the evenings include poetry written by up-and-coming poets Lucy Reid and Johnny Gecewicz, inspired by the Wyeth painting Christina’s World. According to Reid, “Selections included in the performance were chosen to illustrate specific Wyeth paintings in the exhibition, as well as specific themes in Wyeth’s art, such as mortality, the seasons, and loneliness.” Each performance will be at 7 pm. General admission for these special performances is $30; Hyde members - $20. Seating is limited so reservations are suggested. The Art of The Wyeths at The Farnsworth Michael Komanecky, who is the chief curator at The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, will discuss the Farnsworth pictures that are featured in The Hyde’s current exhibition Andrew Wyeth: American Legend. In addition, he will discuss the Wyeth family legacy at The Farnsworth and how the works came to be a part of that museum’s distinguished collection. The lecture will be held at 2 pm. Admission to the talk is free for members; suggested donation for all others is $5 and includes admission to historic Hyde House. This is the closing day of The Hyde’s summer exhibition. Tickets for the Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend exhibition are $5 for members and $10 general admission. Children under 14 are admitted free of charge.

Andrew Wyeth: An American Legend The exhibition, organized by The Hyde Collection, will introduce the broad span of work by this most beloved American artist. Curated by Hyde Executive Director David F. Setford and Deputy Director and Chief Curator Erin B. Coe, the exhibition will seek to unravel the myth surrounding Wyeth and understand the man behind the paintbrush. According to Setford, “This will be the first opportunity since the artist’s death earlier this year to begin to critically reevaluate his contribution to and position in American art of the twentieth century.”
The exhibition will feature sections devoted to early coastal watercolors and landscape paintings, as well as a look at Wyeth’s models, his interest in vernacular architecture, and his connection to both the Regionalist tradition and Magic Realism.
The exhibition will comprise approximately fifty works, with the core coming from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. Featured in the exhibition will be examples of the artist’s works created in dry brush, watercolor, pencil, and tempera - including The Hyde’s own Wyeth watercolor – The Ledge and the Island, 1937- as well as works on loan from museums and private collections. “By showing the spectrum of the artist’s subject matter and his masterful skill in a variety of media, we expect the exhibition to appeal to a very broad audience,” said Coe.

8th Annual A Taste of Art The evening’s offerings include a broad array of wines, complementary foods, and live entertainment. Putnam Wine (Saratoga Springs) brings wines from New York and other US wine-producing regions, as well as vintages from Europe, South America, and Australia. The wines are complemented by food samplings from a number of area restaurants including SUNY Adirondack Culinary Program, The Anvil Restaurant, Friends Lake Inn, Fifty-South, GG Mama’s, The Georgian, The Grist Mill on the Schroon, The Inn at Erlowest, Luisa’s Italian Bistro, and The Sagamore. Attendees will have to opportunity to bid on silent auction items including regional food specialties, ceramics, and original works of art and will be entertained by the music of Tim Wechgelaer and Larry Clyman, playing a variety of roots- based music, including folk, blues, Irish, and swing standards.
Tickets for ‘A Taste of Art’ are $75 per person. Reservations are required and accepted on a first-come, first served basis. A special master class is open to Connoisseur Committee members (those contributing an additional $250 to the event). Special Places: An Exhibit Featuring YOUR History For all of us there are special places that evoke strong memories of experiences from the past. Everyone has favorite stores where they shopped, restaurants where they socialized with friends, or secluded spots where they found quiet. A home, or a camp on the lake, has associations with family gatherings. Beaches, backyards and ball fields prompt memories of summer fun.
Special Places will be shaped by what members of the community choose to share with each other. People are invited to get out their personal photo collections and to see which photos evoke memories, and to bring favorite photos into the museum. There they will be reproduced and displayed so those memories can be shared with others. Items are welcome as well. Throughout the run of the exhibit people are encouraged to return to discover what memories others have contributed.
One doesn't have to contribute a photo to participate. To start the flow of memories the exhibit is seeded with more than 50 photos of places from the area's past. Included are images of street scenes, schools, churches, major factories and well-known stores. A large Memory Map allows people to share their memories of special places in the greater Glens Falls region, from northern Saratoga County to Lake George. For families there also will be activity in which kids can make maps of their own neighborhoods.
During the spring and summer the museum will host a series of evening Community Sharing Sessions open to the general public. Participants will have conversations about such topics as great restaurants, shopping in Glens Falls, fun in Crandall Park and favorite spots in the area. More serious discussions will address urban renewal, suburban sprawl and what's important to keep. The discussion topics also will be posted on the Chapman's Facebook so that people who cannot attend may participate.

S.R. Stoddard Exhibit - Animal Studies
Stoddard is best known for his landscape views of the Adirondack region. However, he also photographed other subjects that caught his creative fancy. This lighhearted sampling of the museum's 3000 Stoddard photographs features animals -- kittens, dogs, cows and even a frog.

LARAC “Viewpoints” Exhibit The exhibit explores the works of five artists: Robert Hacunda, Anne Havel, John Kudukey, Judith Plotner, and Dolores Thomson. Through the use of photography, oils, fabrics, and organics such as clay, enamels, metals, and glass, “Viewpoints” is an exhibit reflecting diverse interpretations of the artists’ world around them; for example, their sense of personal connection to the earth, the fragility and timelessness of nature, the essence of life experiences, and the celebration of imperfections around us.

The 39 Steps This comic thriller is a theatrical riff on the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film. "The 39 Steps" premiered in London in 2006 and won two Tony Awards for its Broadway run in 2008. It features four actors performing 150 different roles. The stage script was adapted by Patrick Barlow from the Hitchcock movie of the same name – which in turn was based on a spy-thriller by novelist John Buchan. The plot follows Richard Hannay as he sets out for a night of music hall entertainment only to be ensnared in a dangerous attempt to smuggle top-secret information out of the country.
Two actors play the leads – Patrick Toon as the dashing Hannay, and Margaret Loesser Robinson as the ingénue, Pamela. Two other veteran actors – Wynn Harmon and Michael DiLiberto – play the other 148 roles. “The 39 Steps” is a live action comedy perfect for the whole family.

American Discourse Show at Lapham Gallery. Normal gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm. The exhibit features the works of five artists: Pam Barker, Pat Dowling Bull, Paul Chapman, Emily Thomson, and Anna Dibble. The artists’ work reflects various interpretations of life, ‘as they see it’. The range of Barker’s expressive sculpture, Dowling Bull’s visual ethnography, Chapman’s technical and personal realism, Thomson’s autobiographical studies and Dibble’s glance at human angst, together speak in a dialogue that leaves an imprint on the viewer.

Honda Civic Tour featuring Paramore, Tegan & Sara, New Found Glory, and Kadawatha
The legacy of the Honda Civic Tour burns bright, and Paramore is the latest band representing the roots of the music that started it all. Since the tour's inception in 2001, powerful acts like blink-182, Incubus, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Black Eyed Peas and Fallout Boy have rocked audiences across the U.S. Some of the greatest bands of the last decade have passed the torch year to year, and history is still in the making.

“AMERICAN CARNAGE” TOUR: SLAYER & MEGADETH With Special Guests TESTAMENT Slayer. Megadeth. The two names synonymous with fierce, crunching power. Two bands whose histories are inevitably intertwined in defining the thrash/metal genre. Individually, their respective prowess and accomplishments are impressive; but together, they're brutal and unstoppable. Megadeth and Slayer will join forces to co-headline "American Carnage," the most blistering, the most explosive, and the most eagerly anticipated mega-tour making its way to Glens Falls on August 11. In addition, Testament - who was also on the "Clash of the Titans" bill in 1991, will be Special Guests on the entire tour, marking the first time that all three bands have shared a stage together in more than 18 years, making this a "must see" metal event.

Have a Seat in Glens Falls A downtown outdoor art project. Made by regional fine artists, each Adirondack chair is a unique design reflecting why Glens Falls is such a special place. Stroll through our charming historic downtown as you enjoy the art, boutiques, restaurants, and attractions. At the end of the season these chairs will go up for auction at a charitable event with proceeds going to the City Park Restoration Project, Crandall Public Library, Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council, and our wonderful artists.
